Austria uses a points-based system called the Red-White-Red Card. One of its most useful streams is for skilled workers in shortage occupations, jobs where there are fewer than 1.5 registered job seekers per vacancy.
Shortage occupations 2026
The 2026 regulation lists 64 nationwide and 66 regional shortage occupations. These typically include many technical trades and engineering roles, metalworking, electrical installation, IT and health and care professions. Check the current list on migration.gv.at.

How the points work
- You need at least 55 of 90 points, awarded for qualifications, work experience, language skills (German or English) and age.
- You must have completed training in the occupation, such as an apprenticeship, vocational school or degree comparable to Austrian standards.
- No labour market test is needed for shortage occupations.
Pay
There is no fixed minimum salary for this stream. Instead you must be paid at least the collective agreement rate for your job, which is binding in most Austrian sectors.
Process
- Get a binding job offer from an Austrian employer.
- Apply at the Austrian embassy, or your employer can apply in Austria on your behalf.
- The card is usually valid for up to two years and tied to that employer. Family can follow on the Red-White-Red Card Plus.
The government’s WORK in AUSTRIA service offers free guidance to applicants and employers.
