Germany has one of the largest nursing shortages in Europe. Hospitals and care providers actively recruit nurses from abroad and often pay for language courses and recognition.
Pay
Once fully recognised, nurses typically earn about €3,000–€3,800 gross per month, depending on the collective agreement (for example TVöD-P for public hospitals), region and shift allowances. Before recognition you may be paid less, as a nursing assistant.

The recognition process (Anerkennung)
- Apply to the responsible authority in the federal state where you will work. Your employer often handles this.
- The authority compares your training with German standards. If there are gaps, you complete an adaptation course or pass a knowledge exam.
- You must prove German language skills, usually at B2 for nursing, sometimes with a specialist nursing-language certificate.
Visa options
- Visa for recognition measures: come to Germany to complete your adaptation course while working in a related role.
- Recognition partnership: start working with an employer while the recognition is completed in Germany.
- Skilled worker residence permit once you are fully recognised.
How to start
- Begin learning German now. A1–B1 courses at a Goethe-Institut or another recognised school are the biggest step.
- Look at government-backed programmes and reputable employers listed on Make it in Germany.
- Be careful with agencies that charge high fees. Reputable German employers cover most recruitment costs.
