The Netherlands has one of Europe’s most international job markets. Many tech, engineering and finance companies work in English. The Highly Skilled Migrant (kennismigrant) permit is the main route, and it is mostly about salary and the employer, not your degree.
2026 salary thresholds (gross per month, excluding 8% holiday allowance)
- Age 30 and over: €5,942
- Under 30: €4,357
- Recent graduates of Dutch universities or top-ranked foreign universities (within three years): €3,122
The employer must be a recognised sponsor
Only employers registered with the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) as recognised sponsors can use the highly skilled migrant scheme. The IND publishes a public register, so search the company name before applying.

EU Blue Card alternative
The Dutch EU Blue Card needs a higher-education degree and a salary of at least €5,942 a month (€4,754 for recent graduates). It is useful if your employer is not a recognised sponsor, and it makes moving within the EU easier later.
In-demand fields
Software and data engineering, semiconductors and high-tech manufacturing (the Eindhoven region), logistics, finance and life sciences.
Good to know
- Processing with a recognised sponsor is often only a few weeks.
- Some expats qualify for a tax facility (the “30% ruling”). Its rules have been tightened, so check current conditions.
- Housing in Amsterdam and Utrecht is expensive and scarce. Factor this into salary negotiations.
Frequently asked questions

Can my partner work?
Yes. Family members of highly skilled migrants can work in the Netherlands without a separate work permit.
How long is the permit valid?
Usually for the length of your contract, up to five years.
