Canada’s national plan to cut childcare fees to an average of $10 a day has increased the number of childcare spaces, and with it the demand for qualified early childhood educators (ECEs).
Pay
ECEs typically earn about CA$20–$30 an hour, and several provinces have introduced wage grids or top-ups for certified educators.

Certification
Each province certifies ECEs. Examples are the College of Early Childhood Educators in Ontario, the ECE Registry in British Columbia and Alberta Children’s Services. Foreign-trained educators submit transcripts and course descriptions for assessment. You may be certified at an assistant level first and upgrade by completing extra courses.
Immigration options
- Provincial Nominee Programs: several provinces have prioritised ECEs in targeted draws.
- Express Entry: education-related categories have appeared in recent draws.
- Employer-supported work permits, depending on wage level and LMIA rules in that region.
How Canadian employer sponsorship works: most employers hiring a foreign worker must first get a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), proving they could not find a Canadian to do the job. The employer pays the $1,000 LMIA fee and may not recover it from you. From 1 April 2026, low-wage LMIAs still face a 10% workforce cap (up to 15% for some rural employers in participating provinces) and are refused in many cities with unemployment at or above 6%. Rules change often, so check Canada.ca.
Tips
- Start your provincial certification assessment before you apply for jobs.
- Get your police certificate and first aid/CPR ready, since centres need them before you start.
- Look at francophone centres outside Quebec if you speak French, as demand is especially strong.
