Many people think you need a Canadian employer to move to Canada. You don’t. Express Entry is Canada’s main system for skilled workers, and it gives successful candidates permanent residence straight away, with spouse and children included.
How it works
- Check that you qualify for a programme, usually the Federal Skilled Worker Program. That requires at least one year of continuous skilled work experience, a language test and an education credential assessment (ECA).
- Create an online profile. You receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on age, education, language, work experience and other factors.
- IRCC holds regular draws and sends an Invitation to Apply (ITA) to candidates above the cut-off.
- After an ITA, you submit the full application with documents, medicals and police certificates.
Category-based draws
Canada also runs targeted draws for priority groups, often with lower cut-off scores. Recent categories have included healthcare and social services, trades, French-language proficiency and education. If you work in one of these fields, your chances can be much better than your general CRS score suggests.

How to boost your score
- Language is the biggest lever. Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 adds a lot of points.
- French earns significant extra points, even at an intermediate level.
- A provincial nomination adds 600 points, which practically guarantees an ITA.
Costs to plan for
Language test, ECA, the government processing and right-of-permanent-residence fees, medicals, and settlement funds, unless you already have a valid job offer or are working in Canada.
Creating a profile is free on Canada.ca. Nobody can “guarantee” an ITA.
Frequently asked questions
What CRS score do I need?
It changes with every draw. Category draws often have lower cut-offs than general draws.
How long is an Express Entry profile valid?
Up to 12 months. You can create a new one if it expires.
Do I need proof of funds?
Yes for most FSW candidates, unless you have a valid job offer or are working in Canada. The amount depends on family size.
