Medical laboratory scientists (MLS), also called medical technologists, run the tests behind most diagnoses. US hospitals and reference labs report persistent shortages, and some recruit internationally.
Pay
MLS salaries are typically around $60,000 to $85,000, higher with night shifts, specialist areas (blood bank, microbiology, molecular) and in states such as California and New York.

Certification: ASCP international
Most US employers want the ASCP Board of Certification credential. Foreign-educated scientists usually take the MLS(ASCPi) international certification. Eligibility normally requires a bachelor’s degree with the right science coursework plus clinical laboratory experience. Check the current ASCP eligibility routes before applying.
State licensing
A handful of states, including California, New York and Florida, require a separate state licence. Most others rely on certification.
Visa routes
- H-1B: MLS is a degree-level role. Hospitals affiliated with universities may be cap-exempt, which avoids the lottery.
- EB-3 / EB-2: some employers sponsor green cards for experienced scientists.
Note for Nigerian applicants: since 1 January 2026, a US presidential proclamation has suspended most immigrant visas (green cards processed at an embassy) and B, F, M and J visas for Nigerian nationals who were outside the US without a valid visa on that date, with limited exceptions. Temporary work visas such as H-1B are not on the suspended list, but consulates may issue them with shorter validity. Check the latest guidance from the US Embassy in Nigeria before you pay for anything.
Tips
- Keep detailed records of your lab rotations and instruments used, as ASCP will ask for documentation.
- Target academic medical centres first, since they are the most likely to be cap-exempt.
- Avoid agencies that charge you for “placement”. Employers pay sponsorship costs.
