Software development is a graduate-level occupation, so it still qualifies for the Skilled Worker visa after the 2025 reforms. London’s fintech scene, the big banks, consultancies and a growing number of companies in Manchester, Leeds and Edinburgh sponsor international developers.
Salary
Mid-level developers typically earn £45,000–£65,000, and senior engineers and contractors earn £70,000+. To be sponsored, your salary must meet the general threshold of £41,700 or the occupation’s going rate, whichever is higher.

New entrants can be paid less: 70% of the going rate, subject to a floor. This covers applicants under 26, recent graduates and people switching from a UK student visa.
2026 rules in brief: since 22 July 2025, most Skilled Worker jobs must be at graduate level (RQF 6) and pay at least £41,700 a year or the occupation’s “going rate”, whichever is higher. Some roles have lower rates, such as new entrants, Health and Care roles, and jobs on the Temporary Shortage List, which runs until at least the end of 2026. Always check the current figures on GOV.UK before you apply.
What employers look for
- Strong skills in in-demand stacks: Java, C#/.NET, Python, TypeScript/React, Go, cloud (AWS/Azure) and DevOps.
- A clear, one- to two-page UK-style CV with no photo and measurable achievements.
- English at CEFR B2. Many degrees taught in English count.
Finding sponsors
- Download the Register of Licensed Sponsors from GOV.UK and filter for tech companies in your target city.
- Search job boards using “visa sponsorship available”.
- Apply directly and say early that you need sponsorship.
Costs
The employer pays for the CoS and the Immigration Skills Charge. You normally pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge unless the employer agrees to cover them.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a degree?
Not necessarily. The job must be at RQF 6, but the visa does not always require you personally to hold a degree. Employers usually expect one or equivalent experience.
Can I switch employers later?
Yes. Your new employer must be a licensed sponsor and issue a new Certificate of Sponsorship.
Is there a route without sponsorship?
The Global Talent visa is an option for leading or promising tech talent, endorsed by an approved body.
Information checked in October 2026. Immigration rules change often, so always confirm the latest requirements on the official government website before applying or paying any fees.
