Nursing gets most of the attention, but the NHS also recruits internationally for many allied health professions. These roles qualify for the Health and Care Worker visa, which has lower fees and no Immigration Health Surcharge.
In-demand professions
- Diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers
- Physiotherapists
- Occupational therapists
- Speech and language therapists
- Pharmacists (hospital and community)
- Biomedical scientists
Registration
Most of these professions register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), which has an international application route that assesses your qualifications and experience. Pharmacists register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), which has its own route for overseas pharmacists, including an assessment and a registration exam.

Pay
Newly registered professionals usually start on NHS Band 5 (about £31,000+), and experienced and specialist staff move to Band 6–7 (roughly £38,000–£48,000+).
2026 rules in brief: since 22 July 2025, most Skilled Worker jobs must be at graduate level (RQF 6) and pay at least £41,700 a year or the occupation’s “going rate”, whichever is higher. Some roles have lower rates, such as new entrants, Health and Care roles, and jobs on the Temporary Shortage List, which runs until at least the end of 2026. Always check the current figures on GOV.UK before you apply.
Steps
- Start HCPC/GPhC registration early. It is the slowest part.
- Search NHS Jobs for posts that mention international applicants or sponsorship.
- Your trust issues the Certificate of Sponsorship once you accept an offer.
