With the UK closing its care worker visa to overseas recruitment in 2025, many carers have turned to Ireland. Ireland still allows employers to hire non-EU healthcare assistants, home carers and care workers on a General Employment Permit (GEP).
2026 salary rules
From 1 March 2026, the minimum annual salary for healthcare assistants, home carers and care workers on an employment permit is €32,691. The general GEP threshold for most other roles is €36,605.

Requirements
- A relevant care qualification. Irish employers typically ask for QQI Level 5 in Healthcare Support or an equivalent assessed qualification.
- A full-time job offer, usually for at least two years.
- The employer generally carries out a labour market needs test, advertising the job in Ireland and the EU before hiring from outside.
- Good English for communicating with residents and families.
How to find genuine employers
- Apply to established nursing home groups and HSE-approved home care providers via their own websites.
- Check that the job is advertised publicly. Many are also listed on the EURES portal.
- Ask for a written contract that states the salary (at or above the threshold) and hours.
Red flags
An employer or agent asking you to pay for the permit, or offering a salary below €32,691, is not following Irish rules. Permit fees are normally paid by the employer, and recruitment fees charged to workers are a warning sign.
Frequently asked questions
Is QQI Level 5 mandatory?
Most employers require it or an equivalent qualification, and HIQA standards expect trained staff.
Can I bring my family?
General Employment Permit holders usually need to wait before family can join, and must meet income rules. Check the latest rules.
Can I switch employers?
Generally only after a minimum period with your first employer, and with a new permit.
