Electrician Jobs in Canada for Foreign Workers: Licensing and Immigration

Construction and industrial electricians are in demand across Canada. How to get your trade recognised, typical pay, and the visa and PR routes.

Electrician Jobs in Canada for Foreign Workers: Licensing and Immigration

Housing, transit and energy projects have kept demand high for construction and industrial electricians (NOC 72200/72201). Electrical work is a regulated, compulsory trade in most provinces, so recognition of your skills is the key step.

Pay

Licensed electricians typically earn about CA$30–$45 an hour, and more with overtime on industrial and remote sites.

Getting licensed

  1. Contact the provincial apprenticeship authority, for example Skilled Trades Ontario, Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training or SkilledTradesBC.
  2. Apply for a trade equivalency assessment, with documented proof of your hours and training.
  3. Pass the Certificate of Qualification exam (often the Red Seal exam). You may need to work under supervision first.
  4. Learn the Canadian Electrical Code, which is different from IEC/BS standards.

Immigration routes

  • LMIA-supported work permit with a contractor.
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program and trades-focused Express Entry draws.
  • Provincial nominee streams for in-demand trades.

How Canadian employer sponsorship works: most employers hiring a foreign worker must first get a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), proving they could not find a Canadian to do the job. The employer pays the $1,000 LMIA fee and may not recover it from you. From 1 April 2026, low-wage LMIAs still face a 10% workforce cap (up to 15% for some rural employers in participating provinces) and are refused in many cities with unemployment at or above 6%. Rules change often, so check Canada.ca.

Search Job Bank for electrician roles open to foreign workers, and always verify the employer independently.

Apply only through the employer's official website or a government job portal. Genuine employers never ask you to pay for a job offer, interview or visa sponsorship — if someone does, it is a scam.
